Environmental and traffic safety aspects are combined in the development of a bicycle and pedestrian path in Neringa

2022 06 09

In Neringa, a part of the pedestrian and bicycle path from Smiltyne to Juodkrante (sections from 2.104 km to 2.956 km and from 2.956 km to 15.567 km) has already been designed. The projects can be implemented after the approval of the Curonian Spit National Park Authority and other interested institutions. It is planned that reconstruction works on this section could start in quarter III-IV of this year, after receiving the approvals from the responsible authorities and successful public procurement.

The other part of the path, from Juodkrante to Preila, is currently being designed and should also be completed this year. Until the start of the construction works, the path will continue to be maintained by AB “Kelių priežiūra” to ensure that road users can use it.

According to Remigijus Lipkevičius, the Head of the Lithuanian Road Administration, the path passes through a protected area in the Curonian Spit, where issues concerning trees, dunes and vegetation are very sensitive. So we aim to combine both environmental and traffic safety aspects in our projects.

The Smiltynė-Nida section of the pedestrian and bicycle path, which belongs to the Road Administration, is being designed as part of the implementation of the four contracts concluded in November 2021. The total length of the path belonging to the Road Administration is about 35 km, stretching from Smiltyne to Preila. The total value of the design contracts is more than €110,000.

The Road Administration was only able to start design work on the path after the municipalities of Neringa and Klaipėda agreed to sign cooperation agreements and received decisions from the municipal councils that the municipalities would take over the ownership of the path when it was completed. After the improvement and handover of the pedestrian and bicycle path, 850 metres of the path will belong to Klaipėda City Municipality and about 34 kilometres to Neringa Municipality.
